The Best Flour Storage Containers for Sourdough Bakers
Bake often and you’ll go through flour fast. Here’s how to store it so it stays fresh and the pantry stays tidy.
Why flour storage matters for sourdough
Sourdough bakers go through flour fast and often keep two or three kinds (bread flour, whole wheat, rye). A good container keeps flour dry, keeps pantry pests out, and makes scooping onto the scale less messy. Whole-grain flours contain more oils and keep longer in the fridge or freezer, so a container that fits there is a plus.
What to look for
- Size. Match the bag you buy: a 5 lb bag fits a container of roughly 4–6 quarts; 25 lb bulk bags need a large bin.
- A wide mouth. You should be able to dip a scoop or measuring cup straight in.
- A good seal. Airtight lids keep humidity and bugs out.
- Clear sides. See at a glance when you’re running low.
